Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on August 23 that Ukraine, together with its US and European partners, has developed a set of proposals for a ceasefire, despite Russia's promises to continue the fighting. The Times reported this.
According to Zelensky, Kiev worked on the plan with representatives of US President Donald Trump and European officials. The plan includes a ceasefire, mutual withdrawal of Russian and Ukrainian troops from the front lines, and the creation of a buffer zone.
"As far as we know, there are several more ideas on the American side. They want to find a convenient opportunity to present these ideas. We are waiting for them," Zelensky added.
According to the publication, on August 24, Vatican diplomat Paul Richard Gallaher visited Russia and is expected to present these proposals. He is scheduled to meet with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on August 25.
However, journalists say that Russia has rejected such proposals before, so the prospects for a serious outcome in the talks remain low.
Recently, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that Russia would not agree to a ceasefire along the current front line. According to him, this would devalue the courage of "our grandfathers who defeated Nazism." He added that a ceasefire could only be achieved under the condition of a "long-term, reliable and stable agreement."
