Two women on Romanian dog rescue die in crash
An animal rescue says it is devastated after the pair are killed in a crash while collecting dogs.
Two British women have died in a crash in Romania while on a dog rescue trip.
Rachael Harvey-Purkiss, from Essex, and a woman from Northamptonshire were involved in a collision, reportedly involving several vehicles, near the Serbian border on Thursday.
The pair were in the country to collect street dogs for UK-based animal rescue group Homeward Bound. It is understood that several dogs also died in the crash.
In a Facebook post, Homeward Bound said it was devastated and called the women "two beautiful rare diamonds".
"Their hearts were full of nothing but love and care for animals," the post added.
"Today we are grieving in a way I can't explain to you... please give us some time to try to process this awful tragedy."
The Foreign Office said it had not been asked for help, but that its staff "stand ready to support British nationals abroad 24/7".
