Twelve killed as Polish bus veers off Hungarian motorway
Dozens more are seriously injured after the tourist bus overturned in the early hours of Sunday morning.
A Polish tour bus veered off a Hungarian motorway and into a ditch, resulting in 12 fatalities and dozens of injuries.
The incident occurred around 01:00 local time on Sunday (23:00 GMT on Saturday) on the M3 motorway, which links Hungary's capital, Budapest, with the northeastern city of Nyíregyháza. Police reported that the bus overturned after leaving the road.
Authorities suspect the driver fell asleep at the wheel and has since been taken into custody.
According to state media, firefighters have rescued 35 of the 57 passengers and two drivers who were on board. News agency MTI reported that emergency services initially tried to lift the 24-tonne bus's rear axle to free trapped individuals before cranes arrived to lift the entire vehicle.
Hungary's ambulance service confirmed that one person sustained life-threatening injuries, nine suffered serious injuries, and 37 others had minor injuries.
Prime Minister Péter Magyar extended his "sincere condolences" to the victims' families and wished a swift recovery to those injured.
