Trump Advisor Calls for Preparation for War Beyond Earth

The American military must prepare for combat operations not only in Earth's orbit but also around the Moon. This was stated by General Dan Caine, Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Caine made these remarks just days after the US announced it had deployed a space weapon into orbit for the first time. Another high-ranking US military commander, Lieutenant General Gregory Gagnon, who heads the Space Force's Combat Forces Command, explained this preparation by pointing to the actions of "potential adversaries," primarily China.

The Space Force is a new branch of the US Armed Forces, established in 2019 during Trump's first presidential term. According to Gagnon, the US plans to double the number of personnel in the Space Force to approximately 25,000 within the next five years. China, meanwhile, established its own military-space units in 2024 to respond to crisis situations.

In response to the deployment of American weapons in space, the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that Beijing is "against the deployment of weapons, militarization, and an arms race in outer space." As the Associated Press writes, a number of statements by the American military contradict international conventions and agreements adopted on the use of space solely for peaceful purposes.

For example, the Outer Space Treaty, signed by the US and China in 1967, requires the Moon and other celestial bodies to be used "exclusively for peaceful purposes." The document prohibits the deployment of nuclear weapons and weapons of mass destruction in space.

However, Secretary of the Air Force Troy Meink said on September 14 that the US now possesses a space weapon in orbit and that it will be used to protect the country's military forces. With this weapon, the military can destroy an enemy satellite targeting US troops or satellites.

In response to questions about the 1967 treaty and other similar commitments, US Space Force representatives emphasize that the United States "will continue safe and responsible space operations in all corners of space."
