US President Donald Trump, in a private meeting, expressed his preference for Vice President J.D. Vance as the winner of the 2028 presidential election. However, publicly, the head of the White House continues to refrain from directly endorsing any candidate, maintaining intrigue around a potential successor.
According to The Washington Post, at a meeting in the Oval Office approximately two weeks ago, Trump stated: "Ultimately, we need to elect J.D." The publication notes that these words are at odds with his public rhetoric, in which he has repeatedly contrasted Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio as possible contenders for the Republican nomination.
The newspaper's sources disagree on the president's intentions. Some claim that Trump has already chosen a successor, while others believe he could still change his mind. According to them, the president is in no rush to offer official support to avoid becoming a "lame duck" long before the end of his term. In response to reporters' questions, Trump responded that it was "too early to think about it."
Vance himself has not yet announced plans to run for president. He previously stated that he intended to discuss the matter with his family after the midterm elections and is currently focused on his work as vice president. However, he expressed confidence that Trump would support any decision he makes.
According to the publication, the Republican leadership race is already causing discord among donors and influential party supporters. The midterm elections could play a significant role: if the Republicans fail to win, the position of Trump's potential successor could weaken.
In recent months, Vance has strengthened his position within the administration. Sources claim that Trump has praised his participation in ceasefire negotiations with Iran, his work combating fraud in federal benefits payments, and his active engagement with party supporters. At the same time, Marco Rubio, who holds several key positions in the administration, has publicly avoided discussing a possible run in the 2028 elections.
