US President Donald Trump said that it would be a "terrible mistake" if the International Football Association Board (FIFA) decided to change its leadership. He published these thoughts on the social network Truth Social.
According to Trump, the FIFA president organized the "most successful World Cup" in history and that if he leaves office, the World Cup will never be so profitable again.
At the end of July, Infantino's intention to sell shares in the World Cup to private investors became known. It was assumed that 20% of the rights would go to a group of private investors led by Joshua Kushner, the brother of Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner.
This proposal was sharply criticized by the world's national football federations. They threatened to boycott the World Cup if the decision to sell the shares was made. After that, FIFA announced that it had abandoned plans to sell shares in the World Cup to private investors, and Infantino personally apologized.
