Trump renames Lake Ontario “America’s Lake”

Donald Trump signed a document at the White House in front of reporters, renaming Lake Ontario “America’s Lake.” The White House broadcast the event live.

Trump said the new name would take effect immediately. When a reporter asked the president what message he wanted to send to Canada by renaming the lake, Trump replied, “Nothing.”

Lake Ontario is one of the five Great Lakes in North America, located on the border between Canada and the United States. It is the easternmost of the Great Lakes and the smallest in area: its area is about 19,000 square kilometers, its average depth is 86 meters, and its deepest point is about 244 meters. The most populous and economically developed province in central Canada also bears the same name.

The American leader announced his plan to rename the lake two days ago on his Truth Social network. According to him, this is due to the fact that the United States does not intend to continue doing business with Ontario. At that time, the US president called the Canadian leadership “clowns” and threatened consequences if Ottawa continued its current policy towards Washington.

Shortly before this, Trump announced the introduction of a 50% tariff on all cars and trucks, auto parts and steel imported from Canada starting in January 2027.

On January 20, 2025, on the first day of his second presidential term, Trump signed an order renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. This decision applies to the official use of the name of the gulf by US federal authorities.

At the same time, Trump has failed to unilaterally change the international name of the entire body of water. Mexico, like many international organizations and the media, continues to use the name "Gulf of Mexico."
