Donald Trump has proposed renaming the Strait of Hormuz "Trump Strait." He said the name would be appropriate now that the strait is under U.S. control. "Just like America itself, it will be 'hotter' than ever!" he wrote on Truth Social.
Trump announced his intention to declare the Strait of Hormuz a U.S. territory on August 14 after the victory over Iran. He later posted a map on social media showing the strait as part of the United States.
During his second term, Trump has renamed three major geographical features, but these changes apply only to official use within the United States.
On January 20, 2025, the Gulf of Mexico was renamed the Gulf of America, and Denali in Alaska was renamed Mount McKinley.
On August 27, 2026, Lake Ontario was renamed Lake America amid a trade dispute with Canada.
These new names are included in the US federal GNIS database and are used by US agencies. However, Canada, Mexico, and most countries around the world do not recognize these names. Google and Apple Maps are showing the new names mainly to American users.
The US president has the right to change names in his own government system, but he cannot force the whole world to use them.
