Trump-linked oil company starts operations in Greenland without government permission

An American oil company linked to Donald Trump is preparing to drill wells on the island without the permission of the Greenland government, The Guardian reported.

As US President Trump reiterates his claims to Greenland, drilling equipment has been brought to the east coast of the island.

The Greenland government has strongly objected to this, insisting that no permission was given for the equipment to be brought in. According to a government statement, "all further logistical matters must be agreed and approved by the Department of Mineral Resources before they can be implemented."

Greenland Energy, a Texas-based company, claims that the territory could contain $1 trillion in oil reserves by 2025. The company plans to allocate $60 million to drill two wells.

Greenland stopped issuing new oil licenses in 2021 for environmental reasons. However, the British company 80 Mile previously acquired exploration rights in this area. Greenland Energy, in return for financing the project, says it will acquire a majority stake in it. However, government permission is required to begin work.

It is known that in July, local residents noticed containers being unloaded on the shore. It was confirmed that the cargo was brought for the Greenland Energy company. A company representative admitted that he had given false information about the presence of a permit at a meeting in June.

The Greenland government does not yet consider it necessary to return the imported equipment. An application for a permit is being considered. According to a company representative, if all permits are received, drilling will begin in October.

Earlier, it was reported that Trump again put forward the idea of annexing the island, saying that Greenland is important not for Denmark, but for the United States. According to him, the United States needs this Arctic island "to protect the world."
