Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and US President Donald Trump held talks in New York on September 22.

Before the meeting, the two presidents answered questions from journalists. They spoke about an energy truce between Russia and Ukraine, US "hell sanctions" against Russia, as well as potential trilateral negotiations to end the war. Zelenskyy said that the war with Russia could be stopped before winter.

"I hope we will end this war, and President Trump will help us with this. I think it is necessary to do this as soon as possible, before winter," the Ukrainian leader said.

The broadcast of the meeting was published on the YouTube channel of the Office of the President of Ukraine. Trump, for his part, emphasized that Moscow and Kyiv would reach an agreement.

"I don't want to say what kind of agreement it is. We will talk a lot about this, including with (Russian President Vladimir) Putin," the American leader said.

Journalists asked Trump if the Russian leader would accept an invitation to meet with him and Zelenskyy on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Miami in December.

"I don't know. I know he would meet, we have already met in Alaska. I think he would agree to hold another meeting. But I'm not sure about Miami," Trump said.

He stated that both Putin and Zelenskyy want the conflict to end. It is noted that before this meeting, Trump had criticized Ukraine for its strikes on oil refineries in Russia. He said these attacks had a serious impact on the rise of diesel fuel prices in the world.

At the meeting, Zelenskyy said he was ready for an energy truce with Russia, but both sides must adhere to it. Trump also stated that he did not ask for a unilateral implementation of the energy truce. The US president had previously twice asked Zelenskyy to stop attacks on oil facilities in Russia.

The closed-door negotiations between the presidents of Ukraine and the US lasted 40 minutes. After Trump was re-elected for a second term, the US became a mediator in the negotiations between Russia and Ukraine. This process was halted in early 2026 against the backdrop of the US war against Iran. However, in August, Washington resumed its mediation efforts.

US CIA Director John Ratcliffe, as well as Trump's special envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff, visited Moscow and then also met with Zelenskyy in Kyiv. The parties are discussing a mutual halt to strikes on energy facilities. So far, the negotiations involving the US have not concluded with a concrete agreement.
