Tokayev Calls on Nuclear Powers to Engage in Dialogue

Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev reaffirmed the country's unwavering support for negotiations between nuclear powers and the prompt entry into force of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty.

This statement is contained in the head of state's address, timed to coincide with the International Day against Nuclear Tests, celebrated on August 29.

Tokayev emphasized that Kazakhstan also supports multilateral measures aimed at eliminating the threat of nuclear weapons. He emphasized that nuclear energy should serve exclusively peaceful and constructive purposes.

The President recalled that the International Day against Nuclear Tests was established by the UN General Assembly at the initiative of Kazakhstan. This year marks the 35th anniversary of the closure of the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site.

Tokayev also noted that after the collapse of the USSR, Kazakhstan voluntarily renounced the world's fourth-largest nuclear arsenal, choosing the path of peace, security, and sustainable development.

Tokayev previously called for an end to hostilities in Ukraine and proposed considering freezing the conflict. He also spoke in favor of resuming negotiations in the Istanbul format, emphasizing that Kazakhstan does not intend to act as a mediator.
