Tokayev answered the question about participating in the presidential election

Tokayev responded to the issue of participation in the presidential election

The Constitutional Court of Kazakhstan declared that the head of state Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has the right to be re-elected in connection with the entry into force of the new Constitution. The president himself reacted to this decision.

The journalist asked the leader of Kazakhstan, "Will you exercise your right to nominate your candidate in the 2029 presidential elections or will there be an early election?" Tokayev noted that it was too early to speak on this issue.

"The Constitutional Court made such a decision. This is legal and I have the right to be re-elected. But as for the upcoming elections, or as you said, in which year I will nominate my candidate for the elections or not, it is too early to talk about this," he said.

The head of Kazakhstan explained this by the fact that "the country has a lot of tasks ahead of it." In particular, he said that practically all of Kazakhstan should be turned into a large construction site, primarily for the construction of social facilities for citizens. He expressed his readiness to allocate funds from the National Fund for this.

"Why should we keep money in foreign securities when it can be used for the welfare of the people? I am against sitting on this money like a dog in a haystack. That is, it should serve the people, our citizens. Naturally, the situation in the world requires analysis and attention. We are, so to speak, walking on the edge of a precipice, but despite this, we were able to ensure peaceful internal conditions, which allowed us to develop. Economic growth is obvious, it is objective and confirmed by major international financial institutions," Tokayev said.

He noted that he would probably give a clear answer about his participation in the presidential election in the future. For your information, on August 23, elections to the unicameral parliament — the Kurultay — began in Kazakhstan. The bicameral parliament of Kazakhstan officially completed its work on June 30.

The reform will fundamentally change the political system of the neighboring republic: instead of the bicameral parliament — the Senate and the Majlis, a unicameral Kurultay was established. The position of vice president has been restored, a new advisory body — the People's Council — will appear, its members are expected to be appointed by the president.

A new Constitution has been in force in the country since July 1. Its draft was approved in March with almost 90 percent of the vote. The new Constitution allows the incumbent President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev to again participate in the elections for the head of state. The reason is that under the 1995 Constitution, persons who held certain state positions may be re-elected or appointed to the relevant positions after the new Constitution enters into force.
