Since the beginning of 2026, attempts to illegally import exotic animals into Russia have been recorded, totaling over 5.5 million rubles. These animals included birds and turtles. One of the most significant incidents involved a shipment from Uzbekistan.

According to information provided by the customs service, a minibus carrying live cargo was stopped in the Orenburg region. The vehicle was en route to the Moscow region from Tashkent through Kazakhstan. Cages containing 103 birds were found inside the vehicle: 93 parrots, 8 Bahama ducks, and two mountain turkeys. The driver was unable to provide any import permits. He explained that he only had veterinary documents from the country of origin and was supposed to hand over the cargo to an unknown person. All birds were handed over to the Ulyanovsk Zoo. Another major incident occurred at Domodedovo Airport, where a passenger arriving from Tajikistan was found to be in possession of 476 Central Asian tortoises, valued at over 3 million rubles. The man admitted he planned to sell them online. The seized animals have been temporarily housed at the Moscow Zoo's Rare Species Reproduction Center.
