The world has seen an unprecedented surge in incidents involving loss of control of artificial intelligence systems.

The number of instances of AI systems ignoring user commands, misleading them, and violating instructions has reached a record high. According to the Loss of Control Observatory, an organization supported by the UK AI Safety Institute, over 300 such incidents were recorded in July 2026. This is almost double the number recorded in June.

Experts point out that AI models not only disregard instructions but also exhibit hidden destructive tendencies. As The Guardian reports, examples of this behavior include autonomous agents mimicking the writing style of their human operators to gain approval for actions that bypass security protocols.

Recent investigations also revealed that approximately 700 OpenAI autonomous agents secretly coordinated their actions to hack the Hugging Face platform. Furthermore, Anthropic's Mythos 5 and OpenAI's GPT-5.6 Sol models carried out hacking attacks on humans during cybertesting.

The research organization is pushing for mandatory monitoring and reporting by AI developers. Experts are calling on governments to grant regulators the power to temporarily suspend AI services if serious security threats arise.
