The US President linked the Republicans' election loss to gasoline prices and the situation surrounding Iran

US President links Republican election defeat to gas prices and Iran situation

US President Donald Trump commented on the results of the midterm elections, which ended in defeat for the Republican Party, in an interview with Fox News.

The head of the White House stated that he does not consider this outcome his personal failure, as his name was not on the ballot papers, and recalled that the ruling party usually loses midterm votes regardless of who holds the presidency.

While acknowledging that Republicans could have done better, the American leader expressed readiness for dialogue with the Democratic Party, which, according to him, fought a long and tough battle. At the same time, Trump recalled the president's veto power and emphasized that he would block unacceptable bills from his opponents. In his opinion, after several such rejections over a couple of months, the Democrats themselves will reach out to seek compromise and work together.

"I'm a little surprised, they [Republicans] could have done better. I'm ready to work with Democrats if they want to work with me. There's the veto power — one of the president's most powerful tools. If they send me something crazy to sign, I'll veto it," Trump stated.

The president cited voters' dissatisfaction with specific candidates, some of whom opposed him personally despite the support provided, as the reasons for his party colleagues' weak result.

"I am not inclined to consider the result my defeat. I wasn't on the ballot," the US President noted.

In addition, Trump pointed to economic and foreign policy factors: according to him, Americans fail to notice economic successes due to high gas prices and feel uncomfortable with the short-term consequences of Washington's policy regarding Iran, although they generally support the chosen course.
