"The reason for our defeat is the war": what are the Republicans saying about the election?

Vice President JD Vance said that the Iran war was the reason for the Republicans' defeat. Some representatives of the party, however, are placing the blame directly on Trump himself.

“The cause of our defeat is the war”: what are Republicans saying about the election?

The final results of the US midterm elections have not yet been officially announced. Nevertheless, it is already becoming clear that the Republican Party, led by incumbent President Donald Trump, has lost control over Congress.

According to projections by The New York Times, Democrats will hold 258 seats in the House of Representatives, while Republicans will hold 177. In the Senate, Democrats are also expected to secure 55 seats to the Republicans' 45.

Trump himself stated that Republicans lost because his name was not on the ballot. Party leaders, meanwhile, are reacting to the results with caution. Among high-ranking officials, Vice President JD Vance made the most explicit statement. He linked the Republican defeat to the war against Iran launched by the White House.

However, lower-ranking representatives of the party are openly calling the president the “architect of the Republican defeat.”

Over the past two years, Senate Republicans achieved major progress: streets became safer, Americans began keeping more of their money, and new growth opportunities emerged for families and businesses.

Despite constant opposition from Democrats, we prevented the largest tax increase in US history, secured our borders to an unprecedented degree, and confirmed cabinet members faster than in the last two decades. We also appointed staunch conservatives to judicial positions across the country at the fastest pace since the Reagan administration.

I am proud of everything our team has accomplished for the American people. I also look forward with great hope to the critical tasks facing us in the coming months.

As 2027 approaches, Senate Republicans will not sit idly by while the far-left, socialist wing of the Democratic Party tries to undo all our achievements.

Fortunately, President Trump is still in the White House. Together with him, we will fight against the most dangerous manifestations of extremism observed among Democrats. We must not allow their radical views to become the accepted norm in society.

During the campaign, we understood that to maintain our majority in the House of Representatives, we had to go against historical trends. Although the results of these midterm elections are not what we expected and fought to achieve, this is only the beginning of a new struggle.

The Democratic majority in the House of Representatives will fall under the control of the most radical and far-left forces in American history. However, Republicans will never stop fighting to defend the Constitution and the values that made America the greatest nation in the world.

We will continue to advance our common-sense agenda and pursue our goal of making America great again.

And in 2028, we will take back the majority in the House of Representatives and finish what we started.

According to polls, many voters who supported Trump in 2024 planned to vote for Democrats out of anger. We asked those who turned away from us what we need to do to regain their support. Their answers mostly came down to four issues:

End the war.

Focus on the cost of living and inflation.

Implement the “America First” policy.

Reconsider relations with Israel.

The cause of our defeat was the war. The president himself acknowledged this last night.

I still look to the future of our country with hope. Those who warned us in advance were right. Now direct that energy toward electing Republicans who share your views.

Everyone has the right to be angry about the election results. Let us use this anger to save our country.

How are Democrats responding?

Today, the American people sent a clear signal: people want policies that unite society rather than divide it, and leaders who offer clear solutions to the problems they face.

The current administration will continue its work for two more years. However, our task right now is to roll up our sleeves and get to work, achieve change where our authority allows, prevent further damage, and build a foundation for the future.

Chuck Schumer

(for now) Leader of the Senate Democratic Minority

Despite all the odds, Democrats won the Senate. We have four words for the American people: help is on the way.
