After the new terminal complex opens, the old passenger terminal at Andijan International Airport will be demolished. According to a Podrobno.uz correspondent who visited the construction site, the existing building no longer meets safety requirements due to the expansion of the runway.
Construction of the new terminal, which began in February 2026, envisions a facility covering 19,600 square meters, more than eight times the size of the current building. This will increase the airport's capacity fivefold – from 200 to 1,000 passengers per hour, bringing annual passenger traffic to 1.1 million.
The current terminal, built in 1979, occupies only 2,400 square meters. Despite the addition of additional arrivals and departure halls in the mid-1990s, the facility has not undergone a comprehensive overhaul since.
Andijan Airport Director Sokhibjon Kenjaev explained that after the runway was expanded, the old building no longer complied with safety regulations, which led to the decision to demolish it after the new terminal opened.
Uzbekistan Airports Press Secretary Evgenia Grande emphasized the uniqueness of Andijan Airport, which is wholly owned by the management company Uzbekistan Airports. She noted that constructing airfield infrastructure requires significantly more effort than constructing the terminal buildings themselves, and a qualified designer is a key factor in success. Specifically, the new runway surface is made of cement concrete slabs, which is optimal for the region's climate and diverse soil conditions.
The modernization is also driven by growing traffic: in the first half of 2026, the airport handled 91,800 passengers and 690 flights.
The extensive renovation project encompasses the entire airfield infrastructure. The project includes the construction of 10 parking bays for large aircraft and two taxiways, one of which will be a high-speed runway. The power supply and perimeter security systems are also being upgraded.
As of mid-August, the facility's completion is estimated at approximately 40%. Construction is scheduled to be completed and the new terminal operational by the end of 2026.
It was previously reported that Andijan International Airport received its first heavy cargo aircraft, a Boeing 747-400F, delivering over 160 head of breeding cattle from Europe to Uzbekistan.
