Fruit that improves memory and brain function identified
Regular consumption of walnuts may improve cognitive abilities, especially in people who are sedentary and do not follow a healthy diet, according to the authors of a study published in the journal "Food & Function (F&F)".
The researchers analyzed data from 1,771 participants with an average age of 61 as part of the Fragnham Heart Study. They assessed nut consumption habits, results of memory and thinking tests, brain volume, levels of neurotrophic factors, and the incidence of stroke and dementia in the last 10 years.
Among participants who had not experienced a stroke, higher consumption of walnuts was associated with improved overall cognitive performance. This relationship was especially evident in the group of participants with low physical activity or poor diet quality. Among physically active individuals, walnut consumption was also associated with an increase in overall brain volume.
However, it was noted that during the 10-year observation period, nut consumption was not directly associated with a decrease in the incidence of stroke or dementia.
Scientists have previously found that eating almonds daily helps improve sleep quality.
