The Hungarian Parliament has elected András Baku as the new head of state. The 73-year-old lawyer was the only candidate to receive the required number of votes.

The meeting was broadcast on Prime Minister Péter Magyar's official channel. The Tisza Party chose Baku from ten candidates. He is a legal scholar who became the first Hungarian judge at the ECHR in 1991, where he served for 17 years.

From 2009 to 2011, he served as President of the Supreme Court. He was removed as part of the judicial reform initiated by former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.

In 2016, the European Court of Human Rights ruled this decision unlawful and ordered the government to pay compensation. He resigned in 2020. The previous president, Tamás Šujok, resigned under pressure from the new prime minister. In July, the Tisza party, which held a constitutional majority, initiated a constitutional amendment terminating the powers of the head of state.

Šujok signed the law but expressed his opposition. Parliament Speaker Ágnes Forsthofer assumed the interim presidency.
