Deputies of the Parliament of Kyrgyzstan have approved the date for the presidential elections. The voting will take place on the fourth Wednesday of January in the year when the term of office of the incumbent head of state expires.

As reported by the press service of the Jogorku Kenesh, the draft resolution "On Appointing the Elections of the President of the Kyrgyz Republic" was reviewed and adopted today, September 24, at a parliamentary session.

Gulnara Akimbaeva, Chairperson of the Committee on Constitutional Legislation, State Structure, Local Self-Government, and Regulations of the Jogorku Kenesh, delivered a report on this issue.

Thus, the next presidential elections will take place on the fourth Wednesday of January of the year in which the term of office of the incumbent head of state expires, which is January 27, 2027.

In addition to the voting date, the deputies approved other changes to the upcoming election campaign. Now, a person who has a expunged criminal record, or if a criminal case was terminated without acquittal, cannot become president. Previously, a candidate was not supposed to have a criminal record, but if it was expunged, they could participate in the elections.

Furthermore, for the first time, the voting will take place on a working day rather than a weekend, as was previously the case.

"We have decided to hold the presidential elections on a weekday. Specifically, January 27 will be a Wednesday, in order to increase voter turnout. The more people there are at the polling stations, the higher the transparency will be, the more opportunities there will be to block corrupt schemes, and the fewer chances there will be for voter buying. We are successfully fighting this, including through such methods," said Marlen Mamataliyev, Speaker of the Jogorku Kenesh of Kyrgyzstan.
