The countries that produce the most fossil fuels in the world have been revealed
In 2024, China topped the world rankings with 4.8 billion tons of fossil fuels produced. The United States and Russia were next. Only five countries accounted for 63.1 percent of global fossil fuel production.
The world's leading countries in mineral fuel production have been identified.
The infographic presented by Visual Capitalist compares the volumes of mineral fuels mined in different countries in 2024 in tons. This data was provided by the Austrian Ministry of Finance.
The rating includes such types of fuels as energy coal, coking coal, lignite, oil, oil shales, natural gas and uranium.
An important point is that this rating is based not on the economic value or energy efficiency of the fuel, but on its physical mass - its volume in tons. Therefore, fuels that are mined in large volumes, such as coal, had a significant impact on the overall ranking. As a result, some large coal-producing countries ranked higher than countries that are world leaders in oil and gas production.
**China – 4.8 billion tons**
In 2024, China produced 4.8 billion tons of mineral fuels, accounting for 28.6% of the world's total. Coal is the main source of mineral fuels produced in China. The huge volume of coal production allowed the country to take first place in the ranking by a large margin. Thus, for every 10 tons of mineral fuels produced in the world, China accounted for about 3 tons.
**USA – 2.28 billion tons**
The second place was taken by the USA with 2.28 billion tons, or 13.5% of world production. Although China produced more than twice as much mineral fuels in terms of tons as the USA, the composition of production in the two countries differs significantly. While coal dominates in China, oil and natural gas make up the bulk of mineral fuel production in the USA.
**Russia – 1.46 billion tons**
Russia is in third place. The country produced 1.46 billion tons of mineral fuels in 2024, accounting for 8.7% of the world market. The composition of production in Russia is closer to the United States than to China, with the main share coming from oil and natural gas.
**India and Indonesia in the top five**
India took fourth place with 1.14 billion tons. This is 6.8% of world mineral fuel production. The main type of fuel in the country is thermal coal.
Indonesia took fifth place with 921.4 million tons. Its share in world production was 5.5%. In this country, too, the main volume was formed by thermal coal.
Thus, in 2024, China, the United States, Russia, India, and Indonesia together accounted for 63.1 percent of the world's fossil fuel production.
Since this ranking reflects the physical volume in tons, not the economic value of the fuel or the amount of energy extracted from it, it should not be interpreted as a ranking of energy production or the value of the fuel market.
