The boy from the Baby Shark music video is back on stage as a K-pop singer.
The main character of the video for the most-watched video in YouTube history, Baby Shark Dance, has released his first number-one K-pop single ten years after his rise to fame.
Park Gong-run, who starred in the video at the age of seven, chose the pseudonym “Baby Shark Boy” for his solo debut. It is being produced by Pinkfong Company, which owns the copyright to the Baby Shark project.
“Baby Shark Dance brought joy to people all over the world. Even though it has been 10 years, I am very grateful that many people still remember me. This is what motivated me to return to the stage and reconnect with people through music,” says the singer.
The popular song about a family of sharks was released in 2016, and the video was performed by 10-year-old Korean-American singer Hope Segoyne. Since then, the clip has been viewed 17.2 billion times on YouTube. The song has been performed at the White House, and has been praised by US President Donald Trump, Tesla CEO Elon Musk, and many other celebrities. It has also become a global hit and dance trend.
Geon Rung has also appeared on other Pinkfong shows over the years. He says the new single, titled “Wave,” starts with the familiar Baby Shark theme song and then moves into an electropop direction. The artist himself also participated in writing the lyrics.
Geon Rung sees this project as the beginning of his long-term musical career:
“‘Wave’ is not a one-time project for me, but a new beginning. In the future, I hope to show my different sides not only through music, but also through other types of content,” he added.
