Ted Lasso actor Fernandez makes professional debut
Ted Lasso actor Cristo Fernandez makes his professional football debut for American second-tier side El Paso Locomotive.
Cristo Fernandez, known for his role as Dani Rojas in Ted Lasso, has made his professional football debut. The 35-year-old Mexican actor realized his aspiration of becoming a professional footballer on Sunday when he played for El Paso Locomotive, a team in the American second division.
Fernandez, who portrayed Dani Rojas in the popular Apple TV series from 2020 to 2023, entered the match as a substitute in the 79th minute during Locomotive's final USL Cup group game against New Mexico United. He joined the team, based in El Paso, Texas, in May after completing a two-month trial period.
Unfortunately, Locomotive lost the match 2-0 to New Mexico United, and Fernandez received a yellow card in the 87th minute for a foul on the opposing goalkeeper, Kris Shakes. During his brief appearance, he had three touches of the ball.
Fernandez had previously played youth football in his hometown of Guadalajara but left the sport at 15 due to a knee injury. After relocating to London, he was cast in the acclaimed Ted Lasso, which follows an American football coach hired to lead the fictional Premier League team AFC Richmond.
Upon signing with Locomotive, Fernandez expressed, "This journey back to professional soccer is about believing in yourself, taking risks, and continuing to chase your dreams no matter how unexpected the path may be."
The fourth season of Ted Lasso is set to premiere on Apple TV on August 5.
