Tashkent hokimiyat plans to engage McKinsey & Company to improve urban governance
The Tashkent hokimiyat (administration) intends to bring in US-based international consulting firm McKinsey & Company to strengthen the urban governance system. The specific areas and phases of cooperation were discussed during a meeting between Tashkent hokim (mayor) Shavkat Umurzakov and a delegation from the company headed by global managing partner Bob Sternfels.
According to the city hokimiyat’s press service, the talks centered on shaping a shared vision for Tashkent through 2030, enhancing the urban governance system and boosting the effectiveness of strategic initiatives.
“Particular attention was paid to how strategic decisions can be translated into concrete projects and how their results can be evaluated,” the statement said.
The sides examined the development experience of major metropolitan areas, including Beijing, Riyadh, Dubai and Moscow, and discussed which management practices from these cities could be applied in Tashkent.
The Tashkent hokimiyat and the company agreed to look into a partnership in staff training and professional development, including for managerial staff. McKinsey & Company specialists are expected to assist in training employees of city services.
“Importantly, this is not simply about hiring a consulting firm, but about establishing a strategic partnership. McKinsey has extensive international experience and successful case studies that could be useful for Tashkent’s development. This step could be significant for the capital and its residents,” the city hokimiyat’s press service told
