Tashkent and Samarkand join FAO Green Cities Network
Tashkent and Samarkand joined the FAO Green Cities Network, a global community of cities working to build greener, healthier, more resilient and inclusive urban environments. Both cities will undergo an initial self-assessment in the near future.
**Tashkent and Samarkand join FAO Green Cities Network**
Tashkent and Samarkand have joined the Green Cities Network of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). Their membership certificates were issued on 20 August by the Secretariat of the Green Cities Initiative at FAO headquarters in Rome.
The network is a worldwide community of cities that cooperate to build greener, healthier, more resilient and inclusive urban spaces. According to the FAO representation in Uzbekistan, it supports sustainable urban development through integrated urban greening approaches and helps deepen cooperation among member cities. The National Committee for Ecology and Climate Change also reported the development.
The network advances integrated solutions and strategies in three main areas: urban and peri-urban forestry; urban and peri-urban agriculture; and sustainable bioeconomy.
“Membership in the FAO Green Cities Network provides Tashkent and Samarkand with opportunities to access technical support and capacity development, exchange knowledge and experience, participate in city-to-city collaboration platforms, receive support in aligning with relevant global frameworks and environmental agendas, develop partnerships, mobilize resources and facilitate investment, as well as enhance their international visibility as leading cities advancing sustainable urban solutions,” the statement said.
Launched in 2020, the Green Cities Initiative seeks to deliver measurable improvements in the health and well-being of urban residents, as well as environmental conditions, in 1,000 cities worldwide by 2030.
Work within the network is directed by the Green Cities Communiqué and the FAO Green City Principles and Criteria. The communiqué was introduced at the first International Conference on Green Cities in 2025. It sets out a shared vision and collective commitments to advancing the global movement for greener cities.
As a first step in their participation in the network, the Green Cities Initiative secretariat will give Tashkent and Samarkand further guidance on carrying out an initial self-assessment. This will help determine priority areas for each city and tailor technical assistance to its needs.
