Target apologises for 'offensive' children Halloween costume after backlash
The retailer says the costume is "hurtful for Black guests, team members and partners", without providing further details.

Target, the U.S. retail behemoth, has issued an apology and pulled a children's Halloween costume from its shelves following a wave of criticism on social media, with many deeming it a racist caricature.
In a statement, Target acknowledged the costume was "offensive" and "hurtful for our Black guests, team members and partners," though it did not elaborate further. Online images depict the item as the "Kids' Glows Under Blacklight Circus Clown Halloween Costume," which social media users and customers argued bore a resemblance to blackface and minstrel show imagery.
"We recognize as a company that we made a mistake, and we are profoundly apologetic," Target stated. "The costume is offensive and should never have been offered in our selection."
Target emphasized that "removing the costume is a crucial initial action, and the company is thoroughly investigating the circumstances that led to this and what adjustments are necessary to prevent a recurrence."
When approached by the BBC for additional information regarding the costume, Target declined to provide further comment.
This incident follows recent challenges for Target, including supply chain disruptions and criticism for discontinuing its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) objectives. The retailer also faced scrutiny in 2023 for its management of products within its Pride Collection.
Target is widely recognized for its budget-friendly apparel and extensive selection of groceries, home essentials, electronics, and toys.
