Taliban rules out military activity after Tajikistan border clash

The Taliban has pledged to Tajikistan that Afghanistan's land will not be utilized for military operations targeting the nation. This assurance comes after Tajik officials reported the deaths of two Afghan citizens in a border skirmish, accusing them of unlawful entry into Tajikistan and involvement in drug trafficking, as per Pajhwok Afghan News.

Zabihullah Mujahid, the chief spokesman for the Taliban, acknowledged that some activity had taken place along the Afghanistan-Tajikistan border a few days prior, but affirmed that the situation was now contained.

Mujahid characterized the incident as distinct from any significant military confrontation or wider security concern, stating, "There are problems to this extent everywhere."

He emphasized that no military actions would be permitted along the Afghanistan-Tajikistan border and reiterated that Afghan territory would not be used against Tajikistan.

Mujahid noted that drug traffickers had historically operated along the border, utilizing it for transit. His comments followed a report from Tajikistan’s State Committee for National Security detailing the deaths of two Afghan citizens during a border clash. Tajik authorities had stated that these individuals had illegally crossed into Tajikistan and were engaged in drug trafficking.

Mujahid refrained from labeling the incident a military confrontation, instead attributing the border activity to the movement of drug traffickers. These recent declarations emerge as Afghanistan's northern borders continue to be a security concern for neighboring Central Asian countries, particularly due to cross-border trafficking and illicit movement.
