Student 'first of Sudanese heritage' to attend Eton

Yusuif Ahmed, 16, will study at the famed school from September after securing a scholarship.

A Birmingham student is believed to be the first person of Sudanese heritage to attend the prestigious Eton College, having secured a scholarship to the renowned institution.

Sixteen-year-old Yusuif Ahmed, a former student at Lift Four Dwellings Secondary School in Quinton, was granted a conditional place after successfully applying for Eton's George Orwell Award. This award provides a fully-funded opportunity for boys who might otherwise lack access to such an education.

Following his exceptional GCSE results, Yusuif is scheduled to commence his studies in maths, geography, physics, and economics at Eton this September.

"It's a big honour for me, my family and my country," he stated. "I hope it shows that anything can happen and that education really can change your life."

Eton has been approached for comment.

Yusuif, whose father immigrated to the UK from Sudan in 2002, decided to apply last year after discovering the scholarship scheme, telling himself, "the worst they can say is no."

Initially, he mistook his acceptance letter for a rejection. Upon realizing the "surreal" news of his successful application, he ran into the school corridor, screaming with joy.

The 16-year-old, who resides in Weoley Castle, underwent a rigorous selection process. This included traveling to the campus for assessments in maths, English, and aptitude, as well as three interviews.

His admission to Eton was conditional on his GCSE results. Among his achievements were grade 9s in maths, biology, chemistry, and physics.

Eton states that the George Orwell Award, which can be awarded to up to 14 students annually, aims to deliver a "transformative educational experience" and offer a life-changing opportunity for boys attending state schools.

Yusuif recounted screaming with joy upon receiving the news.

When asked to provide a reference for Yusuif's application, Claire Stoneman, principal at Lift Four Dwellings, expressed her astonishment, saying her "jaw dropped" upon learning it was for Eton.

"Yusuif is a remarkable young man," Stoneman commented. "He is incredibly bright and has a real thirst for knowledge, but what makes him so special is how fully he immerses himself in school life and the opportunities around him."

She continued, "He is ambitious, articulate and incredibly personable, and we are absolutely thrilled for him."

"Yusuif has made the most of every opportunity available to him and this scholarship is a wonderful recognition of both his ability and the person he has become."

Yusuif, who also holds the rank of corporal with the 485 Harborne and Quinton Squadron Air Cadets, was a member of Four Dwellings' Student Council and represented the school in the national Debate Mate competition.
