Singapore arrests British man two years after alleged theft at Changi Airport
The 26-year-old faces up to seven years in jail for allegedly stealing a denim jacket from an airport shop in 2024.
A British man has been apprehended in Singapore and charged with theft, more than two years after he allegedly stole a denim jacket from a shop at Changi Airport. The 26-year-old was arrested on August 15 of this year while in transit at the airport, and formal charges were brought against him on Tuesday.
The incident dates back to the evening of August 14, 2024, when a retail assistant at Changi Airport reported a missing blue denim jacket from a display mannequin. Surveillance footage captured a man taking the jacket, valued at approximately S$350 ($275; £202), and exiting the store without paying. Authorities identified the individual, but he had already left Singapore.
The Singapore Police Force issued a statement on Monday, emphasizing their commitment to combating shop theft. "The police take a serious stance of shop theft and will deal firmly with offenders in accordance with the law," the statement read. "Offenders should not assume that they can evade detection simply by leaving Singapore after committing an offence."
In the same statement, the police also detailed the recent arrest of a 50-year-old Polish woman on June 11 this year. She was accused of stealing two bottles of perfume from retail outlets within one of the airport's terminals. The woman was apprehended in the transit area just before her scheduled departure from Singapore and was charged with two counts of theft on Tuesday.
In Singapore, individuals convicted of theft can face a maximum of seven years in prison.
