Shakira plans to build ten schools and rebuild a university in Colombia after a devastating earthquake.

Colombian singer Shakira interrupted her vacation to travel to Quibdó, the capital of the Chocó department, which was severely damaged by the 7.4-magnitude earthquake. Accompanied by American philanthropist Howard Buffett, son of investor Warren Buffett, the artist personally toured the devastated areas to assess the extent of the damage and organize humanitarian aid for the affected communities.

Shakira announced her intention to completely rebuild the Technological University of Chocó and build ten new schools to replace those destroyed. The first million dollars have already been raised for this purpose: at the singer's initiative, the Global Citizen movement and concert promoter Live Nation will each contribute $500,000. The main partner in this project is the Howard Buffett Foundation, in collaboration with Pies Descalzos, an organization owned by the singer, who has been involved in humanitarian work in the region for 20 years.

The Barranquilla native also appealed to the governments of Canada, Japan, and the United Kingdom, as well as the private sector and international foundations, to join in the restoration of the department's social infrastructure. The artist emphasized that she will continue her work until every child in Chocó can return to school.
