US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor may be promoted to the post of the new Secretary of State.
According to the publication, Gor's candidacy is being discussed around US President Donald Trump. Following the Republicans' defeat in the midterm elections, he is being considered for several high-level positions. Possible options include the position of Secretary of State currently held by Marco Rubio, the position of White House Chief of Staff replacing Susie Wiles, as well as the position of Deputy Secretary of State replacing Christopher Landau.
“He wants to play a prominent public role,” said an American official familiar with the internal discussions.
Some in the State Department and Republican circles believe Marco Rubio could leave the administration to prepare for a presidential run in 2028 or 2032. Susie Wiles' position around the president was also assessed as unstable. Sergio Gor himself denied reports that he was eyeing a new position.
“This is complete nonsense. Marco Rubio has proven to be the most qualified, mature, and great Secretary of State in history. No one can replace him. He is a dear friend whom I have had the honor of working with as the US Ambassador to India. I am not interested in any position,” he said.
The State Department also denied reports of Gor's potential promotion. Dylan Johnson, Marco Rubio’s assistant for public affairs, called the report “fiction based on anonymous sources.” A White House spokesperson said Gor is not interested in another position, and that Rubio and Wiles are “doing an excellent job.”
Sergio Gor previously headed the White House Presidential Personnel Office, where he was responsible for selecting and vetting candidates for thousands of government positions. He also worked on the Trump campaign in the 2024 elections and spent nearly a decade on Capitol Hill.
In November 2025, he was appointed US Ambassador to India. At the same time, he also serves as the US Special Representative for South and Central Asia.
Due to his direct access to Trump, Gor participates in negotiations with representatives of foreign states, including those outside India.
“The President loves him. He was the only person who, during the years Trump was out of power, brought him useful deals instead of asking him for something,” one of Trump's advisors said.
Earlier, Marco Rubio called his ability to communicate directly with the president a “huge advantage” for the State Department and the host country. According to The Washington Sun, it remains unknown whether Gor could be appointed to a Cabinet position requiring Senate confirmation. When he was considered for the post of US Ambassador to India, all Democrats in the Senate voted against his appointment.
