Serbia's Vučić admits election loss to student-led protest movement
Vučić said early results made it "clear" that his party had lost
Serbia's long-time leader Aleksandar Vučić has conceded defeat to the student-led protest movement in the country's snap parliamentary election.
"We still do not have final results... it is clear that we have lost these elections," the right-wing populist leader said late on Sunday.
Initial figures released by Serbia's election commission pointed to a record turnout, which analysts had said would benefit the student movement.
Vučić had called the snap elections after two years of protests sparked by the 2024 collapse of a train station canopy in the city of Novi Sad, which killed 16 and was viewed as a symbol of corruption and negligence in Serbia.
Vučić delivered his statement at the headquarters of his Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) in the capital, Belgrade.
Celebrations broke out in the city's streets, with people dancing and shouting "victory", cars honking, and fireworks being set off.
