Saudi national charged with secretly planting recording device in OpenAI office
A Saudi national has been charged after allegedly secretly placing a recording device inside OpenAI’s office in California, federal prosecutors said.
Abdulrahman Alfozan, who worked at the AI company as an engineer, was charged at the federal level with using or attempting to use an electronic, mechanical, or other device to intercept oral communications.
OpenAI said it found a “sophisticated recording device” concealed in its San Francisco office and notified the FBI. The company said it used its AI models to determine that it had been planted by an employee.
Prosecutors said the device, wrapped in toilet paper, was discovered inserted into a USB port on the back of a TV in an executive conference room.
OpenAI said it has no indication that source code, model weights or customer data were improperly accessed or taken in the incident. It said the employee has been fired.
