US Secretary of State Marco Rubio did not specify a timeline for repealing the Jackson–Vanik amendment regarding Uzbekistan and other Central Asian countries. Answering a relevant question, the head of the State Department said that this decision depends on the US Congress and suggested directing the question to lawmakers.
At the same time, Rubio noted that he would like to repeal the amendment for the countries of the region. However, the State Department does not have the authority to make such a decision on its own, and Congress has not yet moved the issue forward.
The Jackson–Vanik amendment was adopted in the US in 1974. It restricted trade relations with states that impeded free emigration and provided for limitations on the granting of normal trade relations status, government credits, and certain types of financial support.
Repealing the amendment regarding Uzbekistan could remove one of the legal barriers in trade and economic relations with the US.
