Putin Said an Agreement to End the War in Ukraine is Possible

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on September 3 that there is a possibility of reaching an agreement to end the war in Ukraine. Kyiv also stated that it expects a "new dynamic" to emerge in the peace talks.

Speaking at an economic forum held in Russia's Far East, Putin said that a number of countries, including the US and China, are ready to support reaching a peace agreement. He emphasized that, ultimately, the issue must be resolved by the parties to the conflict — Russia and Ukraine. Putin noted that there is a possibility of reaching a peace agreement.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha told journalists in Kyiv that he expects a new stage to begin in the peace process. According to him, an active phase of political and diplomatic contacts could resume in various capitals around the world. The minister did not provide further details on this.

At the same time, the parties did not indicate concrete grounds for a real breakthrough in the peace talks. On the contrary, Putin said that Ukraine's recent actions are complicating the prospects for negotiations. He referred to reports of Ukrainian attacks on civilian merchant ships and threats to strike civilian aircraft as "acts of state terrorism."

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, however, warned airlines and insurance companies this week about the danger of Russian airspace. He stated that Ukraine only targets Russia's military facilities and does not threaten civilian aircraft. On September 2, Ukraine asked the UN civil aviation agency to call on member states to ban flights in Russian airspace.

Putin said that contacts between Russia and Ukraine are continuing, but they are mainly conducted through intelligence services. He said it is currently difficult to assess to what extent these contacts are leading to a peace agreement.

Meanwhile, Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar stated in Kyiv that India is ready to assist in the peace process. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also emphasized during a meeting with Putin on August 31 that the war in Ukraine must end for the benefit of humanity.
