Public transport coverage of mahallas in Uzbekistan has reached 98.8%

At a press conference attended by representatives of the Ministry of Transport and its subordinated organizations, the results of large-scale reforms to develop the public transport system in the republic were announced.

Between 2020 and 2026, 1,037 new routes were opened in the country, bringing the number of mahallas covered by public transport to 9,331, and the total coverage level increased from 87.9% to 98.8%. The number of mahallas previously lacking transport service decreased from 1,118 to 111. Against the backdrop of the ongoing transformations, the share of the economically active population regularly using public transport increased from 21% in 2022 to 37% this year.

To renew the fleet, 3,500 modern buses, including 753 electric buses, were purchased and put into service between 2023 and 2026. On routes converted to the gross contract system, the headways decreased from 18–20 to 10–12 minutes, and the average travel time to destination dropped from 45 to 30 minutes.

Daily passenger transit volume across the republic grew from 1.2 million to 2.6 million people, and an additional 87 kilometers of dedicated bus lanes were put into operation this year. Long-term plans through 2030 provide for bringing the fleet of new buses up to 5 thousand units, and electric buses up to 2 thousand units.
