President Shavkat Mirziyoyev visits new Centre for Contemporary Arts Tashkent

President Shavkat Mirziyoyev has visited the new Centre for Contemporary Arts Tashkent.

The centre is located in a 1912 building designed by architect Wilhelm Heinzelmann. It was first constructed as a tram depot and later served as a diesel power station.

The restoration plan was created by French firm Studio KO, which kept the building’s historic look and industrial feel while converting it into a modern cultural venue.

According to reports, CCA Tashkent will host exhibitions, lectures, public discussions, film screenings, concerts, performances, workshops and art residencies, and will support Uzbek artists, curators, researchers and young professionals.

The centre will open with its first international exhibition, Hikmah (“Wisdom”), featuring 11 works by prominent artists, including pieces created especially for the exhibition. It will also include an installation from the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, which will be displayed in Uzbekistan for the first time.

President Shavkat Mirziyoyev said the centre should be open to young creatives, professionals and the wider public, and emphasized the need to strengthen international ties and support new projects by local artists.

The centre is set to officially open on September 6.
