Pope Leo XIV diagnosed with a malignant lung tumor

During surgery to remove a previously detected nodule in his lung, a malignant neoplasm was found in Pope Leo XIV. Histological examination confirmed the diagnosis of lung adenocarcinoma.

As surgeon Stefano Margaritor and the pontiff's attending physician Luigi Carbone explained, such a possibility had been anticipated even before the operation based on the results of preoperative tests. An urgent histological examination performed directly during the intervention confirmed the presence of a malignant tumor.

The operation was performed using video-assisted technology. Following the surgical intervention, Leo XIV returned to a regular room.

Earlier, the 71-year-old pontiff reported that a small nodule had been found in his lung.
