Poland detains man suspected of plotting assassination of PM Tusk
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said a man accused of planning an assassination attempt against him and his defence minister has been detained.
The interior ministry had earlier said police received credible information about possible attacks targeting Tusk and Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz.
After receiving details of the planned attacks, security services held a special meeting on Sunday, with a spokesman saying officials were treating the threat as "deadly serious".
Jacek Dobrzynski, a spokesman for the Special Services Coordinator, told local media that the suspect was arrested in the Lower Silesia region and is a Polish national.
"In this case we are talking about a strong likelihood that these threats could actually be carried out," he said.
Interior Ministry spokeswoman Karolina Galecka said the plan was uncovered when the State Protection Service, which is responsible for ministers' security, forwarded police an email containing information about the potential attack.
Tusk has been Polish prime minister since 2023, after previously serving in the role from 2007 to 2014.
He was also president of the European Council from 2014 to 2019.
