Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has announced a complete ban on virtual casinos and online betting games within the country.

"It's like a cancer: either you destroy the tumor, or the tumor kills you," the president was quoted as saying.

This measure was introduced on the eve of the presidential elections. The first round of the election is scheduled for October 4.

"We are facing a serious public health problem related to online betting. This is a serious problem," said Finance Minister Dario Durigan.

According to him, the websites of betting companies will remain open until October 5 so that users can withdraw their funds. Starting from October 6, app stores and internet service providers must block these sites.

Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, who is running in the presidential election, called this ban a "populist, hypocritical, and politically motivated" decision.
