New York honored the memory of the September 11 victims by recreating the Twin Towers using drones
A large-scale memorial project, "2977 Lights Over New York Harbor," took place in New York, marking the 25th anniversary of the tragic events of September 11, 2001. The life-sized outlines of the World Trade Center's Twin Towers were recreated in the sky over the Hudson River.
The light installation used 2,977 glowing drones—one device in memory of each person killed in the largest terrorist attack in US history. The drones formed a dynamic constellation over the harbor waters and then lined up into the recognizable silhouettes of the lost skyscrapers.
The light tribute was organized jointly with survivors, victims' families, and first responders.
The official memorial ceremony in Manhattan will be attended by US Vice President JD Vance, representing the White House. Donald Trump will mark the anniversary at the Pentagon: the organizers of the New York memorial rejected his request to speak, citing a strict ban on political speeches during the commemorative events.
On September 11, 2001, 19 terrorists hijacked four passenger airliners. Two of them crashed into the towers of the World Trade Center in New York, the third hit the Pentagon building in Washington, and the fourth crashed in a field in Pennsylvania after resistance from the crew and passengers.
