Nearly 100 people killed in devastating floods in Nepal
At least 95 people have died in floods in Nepal near the border with Tibet. Hundreds of people, including 291 foreign tourists, are missing. The floods also caused devastation in China-controlled Tibet.
Nearly 100 people have died in Nepal's devastating floods.
According to the BBC, at least 384 tourists who were in the flood-hit area on August 26 have been reported missing. Of these, 291 are foreigners, including more than 100 Indians, 17 Malaysians and 12 British nationals.
Nepal's Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal said the flash flood was triggered by a landslide. The landslide was triggered by an earthquake that struck at around 8:37 a.m. local time on Wednesday morning.
The Helmholtz Center in Potsdam, a research center for geological sciences in Germany, recorded a 4.4-magnitude earthquake in Nepal on Wednesday morning.
Xiangun Zhang of the International Center for Integrated Mountain Development in Kathmandu and other scientists believe that the flooding was likely caused by an avalanche on the Lhende Khola River on the Nepalese side.
The Nepalese Foreign Minister said that the devastation was not only in Nepal but also in China, and that the two countries were coordinating their efforts. More than 70 military and police personnel, as well as customs and border control officers, are currently missing.
