According to the agency, Russian submarines were detected near the Svalbard archipelago.

They were testing a new technology designed to damage critical undersea communication cables, which leaves almost no trace after being used.

During a joint operation involving the UK, Norway, and the US, the Russian vessels were tracked and intercepted at sea. As a result, they were unable to complete the exercise and were forced to leave the area. According to Reuters sources, the undersea cables were not damaged, and the incident was not an actual sabotage but rather a training exercise to prepare for such an action.

The agency writes that the secret operation was conducted by forces of the Main Directorate of Deep-Sea Research (GUGI) of the Russian Ministry of Defense. The exercises utilized special deep-water submersibles to simulate the deployment of a complex system with the potential to cause significant damage.

According to Reuters, the UK and Norwegian governments subsequently presented Moscow with the information they had. The purpose of this was to show the Russian side that Western nations are aware of the new technology and to deter them from using it in practice.

Norwegian State Secretary for Defense Tore Sandvik said that through the joint operation, NATO allies sent a clear signal to Russia that its actions would not remain covert. According to him, any action against critical infrastructure will be detected and will have consequences.

The UK and Norwegian governments had previously announced in April 2026 that a secret Russian operation in the Arctic had been detected. However, at that time, the new weapon technology, the exact location of the operation, and the US involvement were not disclosed.

Reuters also writes that US intelligence analysts are increasingly concerned that Russia might attempt to test the extent to which NATO's collective defense principle — Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty — works.

According to the agency's sources, disabling undersea cables could play an important role in such a potential operation. These cables, laid on the seabed, are of great importance for global internet connectivity, financial transactions, and other strategic communications.

There are two fiber-optic undersea cables connecting the Svalbard archipelago with mainland Norway. Their total length is nearly 1,400 kilometers, passing through depths of up to 2,700 meters in some sections. These cables transmit, among other things, large volumes of data received by SvalSat, one of the world's largest ground satellite stations.
