Mother jailed in Norway for giving son an unusual name

A mother of many children in Norway has been sentenced to prison for giving her son an unusual name, RIA Novosti reported.

A woman named Kirstie Larsen had a dream before the birth of her thirteenth child. In the dream, a voice told her to name her unborn son Brij (from English "bridge"). After that, the woman decided to choose the Hebrew version of this name - Gesher.

However, the Norwegian government did not allow this name. According to officials, this name is too "foreign" and, according to the country's laws, could have a negative impact on the child's future life.

The woman did not change her mind and went to court, but her attempt was unsuccessful. The court fined the woman about 1,600 kronor ($168), but she refused to pay this amount.

“If we had paid the fine, we would have admitted our guilt,” the woman said.

Her sentence was commuted to two days in prison for refusing to pay the fine. For your information, Norway’s naming law dates back to the 1800s. This law allows for the rejection of names that could harm the child’s future or are considered offensive.
