President Shavkat Mirziyoyev attended the opening ceremony of the second Presidential Olympiad, which will feature more than 3.5 thousand young athletes from different regions of the country.
The competitions will take place in 26 sports, including Olympic and Paralympic disciplines. Around 1.5 thousand coaches are providing training for the participants.
Addressing the athletes, the head of state congratulated them, their coaches, and everyone who has dedicated themselves to sports on the start of the competitions. He noted that each participant came to the Olympiad with their own dream and drive for victory.
"Each of you has come to this venue with your own dream, your own goal, and, most importantly, with great faith in victory," the President said.
According to Mirziyoyev, a comprehensive system of sports development has been formed in the country in recent years — from mass activities to the professional level, the selection of talented athletes, and preparation for international competitions. He emphasized that the main goal of this work is to raise a healthy, strong-willed, and independent generation.
"At the heart of this work is our desire to raise children into healthy, strong-willed, and independently thinking people," the head of state noted.
Over the past decade, Uzbekistani athletes have won 5,518 medals at major international competitions, including 1,675 gold medals. This is three times more than in the previous ten years. At the same time, female athletes account for one-third of all awards.
The President separately highlighted the victory of Uzbekistan's men's national team at the World Chess Olympiad, which was recently held in Samarkand. The team won the tournament for the second time, opening a new page in the history of Uzbek chess.
Mirziyoyev expressed confidence that future champions and record holders who will achieve success on the world sports arena will emerge from among the participants of the current Olympiad.
