Large-scale excavations in Zanjir Sarai: archaeologists reveal the secrets of Amir Temur's residence

In the Mubarek district of the Kashkadarya region, scientific and archaeological research continues at the unique 14th-century monument — the Zanjir Sarai palace complex. The work is being conducted by the South Sogdian Archaeological Expedition of the Cultural Heritage Agency in cooperation with specialists from the Ya. Gulyamov Samarkand Archaeological Institute.

The project is funded by the Cultural Heritage Agency as part of a special program to study monuments associated with the life and activities of Amir Temur.

The main task of the archaeologists is to identify the surviving architectural elements of the palace, establish the features of its construction, and study the cultural layers in detail. In the course of the current work, specialists are documenting architectural remains and discovering valuable archaeological materials that allow for an assessment of the historical significance of the complex.

Zanjir Sarai was one of the largest residences built in the 14th century during the period of the Chagatai Khanate, which later came into the possession of Amir Temur. According to historical sources, the area of the complex exceeded 16 hectares.

The ongoing research will provide scientists with the opportunity to reconstruct the exact architectural appearance of the palace and uncover previously unknown pages of the region's history.
