Bolivian police stopped a bus carrying the Sao Paulo football club and found 86.5 kilograms of marijuana on it. According to the Brazilian portal UOL, the club denied any involvement in the incident.
The incident occurred on August 9 in the city of Cochabamba. Law enforcement officers found four packages of drugs on the bus. Three people were arrested. According to the publication, the owner of the bus, Buses Cosmos, quickly provided the football team with another vehicle. The club was not informed about the incident.
A representative for Sao Paulo stressed that the club was not using the bus at the time of the incident and that the players had nothing to do with it. Buses Cosmos also denied any involvement in the incident. Representatives of the club and the company stated that all responsibility lies with the drivers. "The case has already been investigated by the police, the perpetrators have been arrested and are under the control of the Bolivian judicial system," Sao Paulo said in a statement.
The incident occurred shortly before Sao Paulo was due to travel to the Copa Sudamericana for an away match in the round of 16. The match against Bolivian team Bolivar ended in a 1-1 draw.
The return leg will be played in Brazil on August 18.
