Kazakhstan backs ICESCO financial sustainability plan at Rabat conference

Kazakhstan reiterated its support for the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) at the 4th Extraordinary Session of the organization’s General Conference in Rabat, Morocco, Kazakhstan’s Foreign Ministry said. The session gathered ministerial-level representatives from 40 ICESCO member states, as well as ambassadors and secretaries-general of national commissions.

Kazakhstan’s delegation was led by Saulekul Sailaukyzy, Kazakhstan’s Ambassador to Morocco and Permanent Representative to ICESCO. The talks centered on ICESCO’s financial sustainability, the implementation of its programs and the prompt payment of financial contributions by member states. Participants also considered steps aimed at preserving the organization’s financial independence.

Delegates approved a report from the ICESCO General Secretariat on urgent financial and administrative measures. They also backed temporary measures set out in the Emergency Plan for the Sustainability of Operations. A key part of the plan concerns the payment of contributions and the settlement of outstanding arrears by ICESCO member states. Speaking at the conference, Sailaukyzy said Kazakhstan has consistently met its membership obligations and has also offered voluntary support for ICESCO initiatives.

She urged other member states to meet their financial commitments on time, saying the organization’s ability to continue operating depends on members complying with their financial obligations. Kazakhstan also supported the draft resolutions submitted at the extraordinary session and said it was ready to keep cooperating with ICESCO through joint projects and programs.

The Rabat discussions addressed ICESCO’s institutional and financial operations, as well as cooperation among member states in education, science and culture.
