Kazakhstan drafts biotechnology strategy to boost innovation

Kazakhstan is formulating a Biotechnology Development Strategy, slated to run until 2036, with the goal of fostering a complete innovation pipeline from scientific inquiry and technological advancement to manufacturing and real-world deployment.

The proposed strategy underwent review at a combined session of the Ministry of Healthcare's Scientific and Technical Council and the National Academy of Sciences, held in Almaty. Attendees included Healthcare Minister Akmaral Alnazarova, National Academy of Sciences President Akhylbek Kurishbayev, government officials, academics, scientists, specialists, and leaders from medical universities and research institutions.

As per the Ministry of Healthcare, the strategy seeks to forge a cohesive biotechnology framework that connects research, technological innovation, production, and practical use. Officials indicated that this initiative aims to transcend isolated research endeavors by establishing systems that facilitate the practical application of scientific insights within healthcare and related sectors. The strategy encompasses fields such as medical science, diagnostics, pharmaceuticals, and biotechnology-driven manufacturing.

Healthcare Minister Akmaral Alnazarova highlighted that biotechnology should be considered an integral component of Kazakhstan's wider technological progress, stressing the necessity of translating domestic scientific breakthroughs into practical uses. Akhylbek Kurishbayev, President of the National Academy of Sciences, affirmed that the strategy ought to bolster both the creation of indigenous technologies and the adaptation of global biotechnology solutions to suit Kazakhstan's requirements.

Participants noted that this approach is designed to bolster national research capabilities while integrating internationally recognized technologies when suitable.

The Ministry of Healthcare announced that the draft strategy will be refined based on input from experts and those involved in the consultation process. Once the document is finalized, the ministry intends to develop a comprehensive Action Plan detailing the steps for implementing the strategy through 2036. The ministry anticipates that the strategy will enhance Kazakhstan's technological prowess, broaden access to biotechnology-derived solutions, and support the long-term growth of medical research, diagnostics, and pharmaceutical manufacturing.
