Shavkat Mirziyoyev stated that every university must clearly define for whom and what kind of specialists it is training. Speaking about the appointment of Erkinjon Turdimov as Minister of Education and Science, the president noted that it was no coincidence he chose a person who had led four regions.

President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev, at a meeting in New Tashkent on October 12, commented on the appointment of Erkinjon Turdimov as head of the new Ministry of Education and Science.

“Quantity has increased, but quality is lacking. From now on, each university must clearly define for itself who it is training and for what purpose. It is no coincidence that I brought into the Ministry of Education a person who served as khokim of four regions,” the head of state declared.

Gazeta reported on October 9 that Erkinjon Turdimov had been appointed First Deputy Prime Minister — Minister of Education and Science. In connection with this, he was relieved of his post as khokim of the Syrdarya region, which he had held since January 2025.

Previously, Turdimov headed the Navoi region in 2008–2016, the Surkhandarya region from December 2016, and the Samarkand region from July 2018 to late November 2024.

The Ministry of Education and Science was established on October 3 by merging the Ministry of Preschool and School Education and the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Innovation. The reform provides for integration and continuity between all levels of education, as well as scientific activities, the introduction of a unified management system, and increased accountability to the public.

The First Deputy Prime Minister — Minister of Education and Science coordinates the fulfillment of tasks in the fields of education, science, and healthcare. Control and organization over their execution have been assigned to the Head of the Presidential Administration, Saida Mirziyoyeva.
